Are we allowed to make surfboards in Huntington Beach California?

I’d like to shape and construct fiberglass surfboards (not epoxy) in the near future here in Huntington Beach, CA. But, a friend told me the other day that he heard there are a lot of zones that don’t allow it here. Is that true? If so, can you guys suggest a website where I could find out exactly where? Thank you for taking time to read this.

“Stepping Stone” Funboard

$390.00

The “Stepping Stone” epoxy funboard is a performance mini-longboard featuring our “Stable Surf System” designed to paddle easily and make quick turns, while maintaining the width of a longboard. Its design allows it to perform much like a mini-longboard, however it is known for being a much ÒlooserÓ surfboard that turns quickly and carves easily. Maintain your stability on this board due to its wide shape, making paddling a breeze, and more importantly your pop ups on waves will feel solid and strong!Epoxy construction gives you a strong platform that is ding resistant, while staying lighter than your traditional construction, keeping you floating great and paddling fast.Thruster fin setup gives you classic turning and performance while the V concave bottom gives you greater speed and drive down the line. This allows you to not only turn great, but it will make those smaller days a breeze to stand up.After surfing this funboard for just a short time, you will know why it has the name Òfun board.Ó It is a blast to ride! This surfboard is ideal for the smaller surfer just getting started, or a great transition surfboard for a surfer wanting to move down from a longboard to a shortboard but not ready for that big change in board length.

“The Pivot Fish” – 6′ Quad Fin Retro Fish

“The Pivot Fish”, named because of the pivot type turns you get from the board instead of rail to rail, is a quad fin retro fish surfboard… Wide, Stable, and FAST. The ultimate wave catching, quick turning surfboard. The fish surfboard is a one of the most unique designs when it comes to Òwave catch-ability.Ó This board maintains the width of a mini-longboard, but is much smaller in length. This helps maintain your stability while making it a cinch to paddle for a board this short.Nose V concave to single concave at the tail. Get the best of all worlds with this combination of designs. The “V” will help you turn quickly while the “single” at the tail is designed to channel water off the rails allowing you to generate speed and make some killer cut-backs. The quad fin setup is much quicker and faster than the twin fin setup typical of a “retro” fish so hold on while you race down the line.Add Epoxy EPS construction to the mix and you have a surfboard you can’t pass up…Epoxy construction makes this fish surfboard lighter and stronger than a traditional glass construction fish. This makes the surfboard float better, paddle better and virtually indestructible (it’s not really indestructible but pretty close). The Pivot Fish surfboard is perfect for the intermediate surfer, or someone who wants to move from a long board down to a short board.

Liquid Shredder Long 8′2″ Longboard Soft Surfboard

COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM: AQUA, BLUE, RED, YELLOW (we will contact you immediately reguarding your choice of colors!)
First, They are real surfboards with a softer surface, but not super soft, to make it user friendly but they look just like a fiberglass surfboard. Most beginners and kids surfboards are very poorly shaped. This effects the way they perform in the surf, making them hard to turn. Surfing is ALL about maneuvering and turning on the waves. A poorly shaped surfboard can’t turn well.

Second, All original Liquid Shredders have full length solid Peruvian hard wood stringers for strength. Surfboards should be rigid and not flex too much. Many of the old technology “sponge” beginner surfboards and kids surfboards bend in the middle as the rider moves on them. This slows the surfboard and makes for an unstable platform for the rider to stand on. NEVER buy a surf board without a wooden stringer system. Surfboards with weak stringers break easily, even in small surf.

Third, Until Liquid Shredder entered the market in 1999, beginner boards were very expensive. In fact, they cost as much as custom fiberglass boards with $500-$1000 retail prices. Liquid Shredder ® hit the market starting at $159. Now you can own a surfboard for beginners and kids that looks and performs like a custom fiberglass board with the added safety of being soft and priced right. Cheap in cost, never in quality!

Fourth, Liquid Shredder is “Made in Peru Where Surfing Was Invented” by Surfers for Surfers . Peru has some of the best surf and surfers in the world. The Beach Boys even mention Peru in their song “Surfin’ Safari”. That’s why every Liquid Shredder model is designed, developed and tested on the Coast of Peru in some of the best and largest surf in the World. Join the Liquid Shredder team and start Shreddin’.

  1. I have to admit I don’t know anything about zoning laws in Huntington Beach. But i do know a few things about surfboard building, and zoning & building & occupancy codes. If you want to make a board or two for you and your pals in your garage, it is going to be legal, anywhere, because: you are not running a business or manufacturing in a residential zone, and you are not going to need to have a large enough quantity of resin, etc. on the premises to be prohibited. Now, if you are building’ ‘em in your kitchen, and you live in an apartment, there are surely going to be some heavy duty issues there, that change the scenario. If you are shaping commercially, you will have to comply with commercial zoning regulations, that WILL govern what type of manufacturing you do, and what type of processes and chemicals you use. You will want to talk to the City Codes enforcement department, and Fire Marshal.

  2. Are you making them as a a hobbyist in your back yard or are you looking to open a shaping shop? Big difference in whether or not you need air quality permits. Yes, there are areas of CA that prohibit the emission of certain chemicals from businesses. You should poke around on swaylocks.com and ask the same questions there.
